Champion Home Services was recently featured on KSAT 12 News. In the segment, Ben Hubbert helps explain why R-22 is being phased out in favor of R-410a and how to check what your current HVAC system is using.
Why is R22 Being Phased Out?
The Environmental Protection Agency recently ruled that R22 refrigerant is harmful to the environment and R-410a has a smaller environmental impact.
How to Check What Refrigerant Your Current HVAC System is Using:
- Locate your outdoor condenser unit.
- Your outdoor unit should have a nameplate that will identify the type of refrigerant that the unit uses.
**NOTE: R-22 is sometimes referred to as HCFC-22 on HVAC nameplates
Things to Note:
- If your R-22 unit has been well maintained and is functioning well, it does not need to be replaced to accommodate R-410a until you experience a problem.
- If your current system uses R-22 and it springs a leak, do not recharge it with R-410a refrigerant.
