High Impedance Systems
Hi-Z, or high impedance systems, produce a low current with the possibility of high voltage. Due to the low currents in their wires, these HVAC systems are unable to provide a Nest Learning Thermostat with enough power. These systems can also sometimes be corrected with the use of a common wire.
Proprietary Systems
Proprietary systems communicate with HVAC systems through a serial communications protocol, which The Nest Learning Thermostat is unable to communicate with. However, compatibility is sometimes possible if these systems are wired with standard HVAC wiring.
